Overuse of antibiotics in livestock production has caused the rise of dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as MRSA, that pose a serious threat to your health. While the FDA has admitted that humans can be exposed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria by eating or handling contaminated meat, they may now allow a loophole for Industrial Meat producers to continue to use excessive antibiotics in meat production, making the problem worse. Dear Commissioner Hamburg and President Obama,

I am writing in regard to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recent Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) on the agency's Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD), ANPR-Docket No. FDA2010N0155 and Draft Guidance: The Judicious Use of Medically Important Antimicrobial Drugs in Food-Producing Animals, Docket No. FDA-2010-D-0094.

I fear that this rulemaking process will result in relaxed controls on veterinarian prescription practices related to antibiotic use in food animal production, and may encourage more antibiotics to be fed to healthy food animals. This is contrary to 40 years of scientific evidence that shows that the overuse of antibiotics on industrial farms is making antibiotics less effective. In addition, the draft guidance document only calls for voluntary measures from industry, rather than offering concrete measures to limit antibiotic use on industrial farms.

Up to 70 percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used on industrial farms in healthy food animals. Livestock are routinely given antibiotics to make them grow faster and to compensate for overcrowding and unsanitary living conditions. The problem is they are also creating drug-resistant bacteria that can cause great harm to human health.

Antibiotic resistance is a looming human health crisis, as recognized by leading health and medical organizations and the FDA. The FDA must take action now to protect human and animal health by establishing concrete regulations and effective oversight that will protect our antibiotics.
